Search Kent’s heritage catalogue for windmills and Hollingbourne’s Windmill can appear among them. It is a pub in a timber-framed building. The listing describes a public house and changes to its front, not milling equipment.
The name alone is therefore not enough to identify a mill. At Meopham, Herne and Sandwich, the records describe actual mill buildings: their floors, sails, machinery and later alterations.

Five floors at Meopham
Meopham has five floors: two in the brick base and three in the timber body above. Historic England dates it to 1801 and names the Killick brothers as builders. Other sources give different early dates, as our Meopham guide explains.
Wind turned the sails, which drove machinery inside. The boarded body on a brick base makes Meopham a smock mill. The record describes a roof cap, four sails—also called sweeps—and complete working machinery when the account was written.
That description gives the machinery’s condition at the time of the record. To see it demonstrated today, check the sessions listed by the people running the mill.

Two mills, different clues
Herne’s record gives a date of 1781. It describes a dark brick base, a boarded upper body and a small fan behind the cap. That fan is called a fantail; it helps turn the roof cap to face the sails into the wind. The sails were missing when the description was made.
The missing sails belong to that earlier description. Our Herne guide explains later accounts and repairs, as well as the different dates given for the mill. It keeps those historical details separate from visitor arrangements.
Sandwich’s White Windmill also has brick below and white boards above. Its short record describes a cap, shutters and a fantail, but does not give a secure building date.

Choose the actual building you want to explore, then check its visitor advice. A mill’s old photograph may show its machinery, but only a current programme can tell you whether you can see it running.
