Why this place matters
Herne is a Grade I listed smock mill, with a timber-clad upper body over a brick base. The two official accounts disagree on its construction date: the statutory entry says 1781, while Kent County Council’s visitor page gives 1789.
The council describes a long working life ending in the 1950s and subsequent conservation. We retain the date disagreement rather than presenting one version as settled. The building remains a useful place to understand grain milling and later preservation.
