The story of this place
Herne is a Grade I listed smock mill, with a timber-clad upper structure on a brick base. Its published construction dates differ: Historic England gives 1781, while the county council’s visitor page gives 1789.
The council describes milling continuing into the 1950s, followed by conservation. We have kept the date disagreement rather than choosing one year without further evidence. The mill’s history includes its working life and the later effort to preserve it.
