Check the current operator first

Look for an official visitor page and a recent access notice. Confirm opening dates, booking requirements and accessible facilities directly. If there is no clear public visiting arrangement, seek permission from the landowner. “Abandoned”, “listed” and “scheduled” do not establish public access.

Stay within permitted places

Use authorised visitor routes and clearly established public paths. Do not cross fences or closed gates, enter railway land, climb structures or open hatches. This atlas provides no instructions for entering private or restricted sites.

Underground is a specialist environment

Do not enter unstaffed tunnels, mines, shafts, culverts or bunkers on the basis of a map record. Flooding, unstable structures and hazardous atmospheres may not be visible. Choose an official guided visit where one is offered.

Leave the evidence intact

Do not remove objects, disturb remains or mark structures. Respect wildlife, local residents and site staff. Historic remains can be fragile even when they look robust.

Understand the map

Coordinates mark an approximate source location, not a safe entrance. Nearby distances are straight-line measurements, not routes. Conditions may have changed since the historical record was made. Most seed records have unconfirmed access; the few with official visitor information link to the operator and show the date checked.
