The work behind the water supply
At Ramsgate’s Southwood Road water tower, brick and terracotta surround the supports for a large iron tank. Historic England gives its capacity as about 250,000 gallons. Placing the tank high above the town allowed gravity to help move water through pipes to places below it.
The tank required a substantial supporting building, but the builders gave it decoration as well as strength. Arched openings and terracotta details remain part of the protected structure.
Dover’s Connaught Pumping Station served a separate scheme. There, engines drove pumps and later machinery required changes to the building. These two sites show different parts of supplying town water: storing it at height and powering its movement.

A huge tank above Ramsgate
The building had to support the heavy tank above it. The record describes iron supports, arched openings and space for a hoist. Brick and terracotta surrounded this practical equipment.
The official account gives 1881 in one part, while plaques on the tower give 1887. We have not resolved the difference, so neither year is presented as certain.
The protected structure includes railings and gate posts too. The tower was both useful equipment and a large town building. Its decoration is part of the story, alongside the water stored overhead.

New pumps at Dover
Connaught Pumping Station began in 1854 with two large steam engines driving pumps. Each used a moving beam to transfer power from the engine to the pumping equipment. Later workers installed new pumps and extended the building to make room for them.
Historic England records a new steam pump fitted in 1937. An extension was added for another pump in 1954. More than one period of work shaped the building.
The record says the 1937 engine survived when inspected. The later pump had been moved elsewhere by the survey. These are earlier observations, not a list of what is there today. They explain changes in the station but do not promise a public engine display.

A story that needs more research
Brook Low Level Pumping Station in Medway has a much shorter record. It is a scheduled monument, a form of heritage protection. Historic England says its entry comes from an older county list and has no modern account of its history or importance.
That entry provides a starting point for research, but no secure construction date or detailed explanation of the machinery. The history needs more evidence before we can give a fuller account.
We have not confirmed public tours at these three sites. Check with the owner, operator or council and view only from authorised public space. The buildings make part of the old water supply visible, even when the machinery and interiors are not open.
