Advice before you visit

Information checked 2026-09-22. We checked the official heritage record. No site visit or direct confirmation from a landowner or operator.

The story of this place

The first part of Connaught Pumping Station was built in 1854 to house pumps and beam engines for Dover’s water supply. Historic England names Moxon as its designer and describes a building with rounded windows and arches.

The machinery changed with the town’s needs. A new steam pump was installed in 1937, and the building was extended in 1954 for another. The official listing records this sequence in the fabric, rather than treating the station as a building from a single year.

What remains

The listing describes the 1937 steam pump inside the older section. It says the 1954 pump had been removed to a Norfolk museum at the time of its survey. It also calls the building a former pumping station and later museum; that does not prove a museum operates there now.

We have not visited Connaught or confirmed who manages it today. The protected exterior and recorded machinery remain the historical subject of this page, not a promise of public entry.

What we still need to check

The legacy listing is detailed about past machinery but does not establish today’s opening arrangements or the present condition of the equipment.
