The story of this place
Ramsgate’s water works built a substantial tower on Southwood Road to store water above the town. Historic England’s old listing describes a brick and terracotta building with a cast-iron tank on top. It says the tank held 250,000 gallons.
The listing gives 1881 as the construction year, but also transcribes a plaque saying the tower and reservoir were erected in 1887. We cannot settle that difference from this record alone, so the date remains uncertain here.

What remains
The recorded design has three storeys beneath the tank, rows of arched openings and decorative ironwork. The designation also includes railings and gate piers to the west. These details explain why the tower stands out among ordinary utility buildings.
We have not inspected the tower. The listing’s account of internal machinery and fabric comes from an older survey and should not be treated as a report on what visitors can see now.
