The story of this place
Historic England’s updated entry dates Draper’s Mill to about 1843, probably built by John Holman of Canterbury. It describes three pairs of millstones and nearby buildings including an engine house, workshop and cart shed.
The engine house provided another source of power when wind alone was insufficient. The historic gas engine now at the mill was brought from elsewhere in 1998. It helps explain the process, but was not part of the mill from its beginning.
What you can see
The buildings around the base tell the story of loading, repairs and extra power alongside the familiar sails. Guides can explain which parts are original, which were restored and which arrived later.
The council advertises seasonal openings managed by Drapers Windmill Trust. Confirm a date and ask separately about demonstrations; opening does not promise moving sails or an engine run. The council also reports that the toilets do not have disabled access.
