Why this place matters
The updated Historic England account dates Draper’s Mill to about 1843, probably by John Holman of Canterbury. It describes three pairs of millstones and a group of ancillary buildings, including an engine house, workshop and cart shed.
The mill used supplementary engine power as well as wind. Its current historic gas engine was brought from elsewhere in 1998. That distinction matters: a working preserved machine can explain a historical process without having spent its entire life in this building.
What to look for
Look beyond the sweeps to the buildings at the base. Loading, maintenance and alternative power are part of the mill’s story. An engine house beside a windmill is evidence of adaptation rather than a contradiction.
Ask the guides to distinguish original machinery, restored components and equipment brought in during conservation. A useful heritage visit can show several generations of technology; it need not pretend that every part survives unchanged.
What remains uncertain
The council visitor page still calls the mill Grade II and dates it around 1850; the revised statutory entry records Grade II* and c.1843. We use the revised designation for heritage facts and the visitor source for access.
