The story of this place
Historic England dates the altered lock and Castle Street Bridge to about 1804. Lock 92 is the last of nine locks on the connection between the Rochdale and Bridgewater canals.
The two structures had different jobs. The bridge carried a land route across the canal, while the lock allowed boats to move between water levels. The recorded bridge, ramp and lock show how people and boats shared a busy industrial area.

The public canal route gives views of the bridge arch, lock chamber and gates. Together, they show the space needed to move a boat from one level to another and to let crews work alongside it.
