Electricity in an ornamental case

This cast-iron box was made by Hardy and Padmore of Worcester, probably around the beginning of the twentieth century. Known as a feeder pillar, it was designed to control electricity supplied to nearby buildings.

Its decoration includes the Manchester city crest. Historic England considers it a survival from the early expansion of electricity as a public utility, when even an everyday piece of supply equipment could receive an elaborate design.

An old object in a later position

The heritage assessment suggests the box was moved to Castlefield during improvements in the late 1980s. Its age therefore does not establish that it powered the canal-side buildings from this exact spot.

It stands on the north bank beside the viaduct. The wider area has published walking routes, but we have not checked current visibility or the box’s condition. Look from permitted public space, without touching, opening or interfering with the enclosure.

What we still need to check

Historic England considers relocation likely rather than proven. Present condition and operational status are unknown.
