An early branch of the canal
Historic England dates the basin at Potato Wharf to probably around 1760–1765, associating it with James Brindley’s work for the Duke of Bridgewater. It branches from the north side of the canal near its Castlefield end.
The listing describes stone lining and a relationship with the nearby circular overflow basin, known as Giant’s Basin. These are separate features. The wider canal landscape needed both places for boats and ways to manage water.

Viewing the canal landscape
The National Trust publishes a ground-level Castlefield walk that includes views towards Potato Wharf. The surrounding canals, warehouses and viaducts show how the area brought water and land transport together.
View from public paths and respect local barriers. This page does not offer access onto private wharves or a close inspection of the basin walls. We have not surveyed the route or checked the condition of the waterside masonry in person.
