The story of this place
Historic England dates the Marsden entrance to 1798–1811 and lists it at Grade II*. Its semicircular stone arch is the visible end of a much longer canal crossing beneath the hills.
The entrance is only one part of that engineering work. The canal continues underground, while nearby railway tunnels belong to separate routes. Their proximity does not make them part of the same visitor experience or give them the same access arrangements.
