The story of this place
Chillenden Windmill was built in 1868. It is a post mill: the main body rests on a central post and timber supports, rather than on the enclosed base of a smock mill.
The council describes extensive rebuilding after storm damage in 2003. Its present form therefore tells a story of restoration as well as original construction. The supports beneath the body are an important part of what makes this type of mill different.

An advertised opening would provide a chance to learn which parts were rebuilt and which survive from earlier periods. The council describes the exposed supporting frame, or open trestle, as a particular feature of its survival.
A current opening has not been confirmed. The council’s season ends in August, while the village page mentions September openings but also says closed for winter. Check directly before travelling. We have not confirmed general access to the surrounding land either.
