The Forth’s defence records start with small clues
Anti-tank blocks and pillboxes appear in a broad landscape of recorded remains.

A classification is evidence, not a complete history
The Scottish NRHE index supplies structure classifications as well as place names. In the central Scotland collection, these include anti-tank blocks, pillboxes and anti-aircraft batteries. This is a more informative starting point than a name alone, but the supplied period can still be broad.
A classification reading “20th century” does not, by itself, establish the Second World War. The atlas keeps these records in other wartime defences until more precise evidence is attached. That prevents an apparently likely date from becoming a claim of certainty.
Read across the shoreline carefully
Names such as Gosford Sands and Tyne Sands suggest a coastal setting, while the classifications identify the kind of remain recorded. To explain a defensive role or relationship between sites, follow the original record and its supporting material.
Do not turn a string of coastal pins into a named defensive system without evidence. Different records can have different dates, purposes and recording histories. Similarity is a reason to compare them, not a reason to erase those differences.
Let uncertainty improve the story
A useful account can say exactly what is established and what remains to be checked. Note the source classification, its period wording and the record’s update date. Then add any finer claim only when a source supports it.
Coastal access also needs current information. Tides, private land and changing conditions cannot be assessed from a heritage point. Use authorised public places and official visitor guidance. The reward of this collection is a better set of historical questions, not an implied invitation to approach every recorded structure.
