The story of this place
The permanent battery was built in 1913–1914 for the Chattenden and Lodge Hill naval depots. Historic England identifies it as one of Britain’s earliest permanent anti-aircraft installations.
Its first purpose predates the Second World War. The record also describes reuse and alterations during that later conflict. The site therefore contains more than one stage of defence work, rather than belonging wholly to the period most often associated with air raids.

What you can see
The recorded layout includes gun positions, ammunition storage, accommodation and shelter. These supporting spaces were needed to supply the weapons and house the people operating them.
The heritage description helps explain those jobs, but it is not a current safety inspection. We have not confirmed a public route or permission to enter the buildings. Later alterations belong to the history too; their presence should not be mistaken for evidence that the site is open or safe to explore.
