East Trinity Road railway tunnel

A former railway tunnel lies on Edinburgh’s Trinity Path, now a council-maintained route for walking and cycling.

Can I visit? Visitor access offered.

The council’s May 2026 register identifies Trinity Path as an adopted footway and cycleway passing under East Trinity Road. Follow the public path and any temporary closure notices; this does not cover other railway land.

Advice before you visit

Information checked 2026-09-26. Official records and the cited historical or visitor sources checked. No site visit or direct operator confirmation.

The railway became a path

Historic Environment Scotland’s acquired index identifies the structure at East Trinity Road as a nineteenth-century railway tunnel. Edinburgh’s core paths plan describes the wider network of former railway lines being converted for walking and cycling after the tracks were removed.

The Trinity branch connects the northern neighbourhood with the wider path network. The old transport corridor still carries people, but trains have given way to walking, wheeling and bicycles.

Public route evidence

The council’s public roads register, dated May 2026, records Trinity Path running south from Trinity Crescent and passing beneath Lennox Row and East Trinity Road. It identifies the route as a footway and cycleway adopted for maintenance.

This supports use of the established path. It does not guarantee that every entrance has step-free access or that the route is free of temporary works. We have not inspected the tunnel, lighting or surfaces. Check local notices and share the path with other users.

What we still need to check

The full Trove entry could not be retrieved. Exact construction dates, present condition and step-free access are not asserted.
